Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently challenge each other. He had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
