Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he liked gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. He was able to access a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
