Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often compete against each other. He had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
