He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the detrimental feedback from other people kill his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning period and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an undying passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his success. Phil admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
